What is Domestic Abuse?
Domestic violence refers to a pattern of abusive behavior in an intimate relationship where one partner seeks to gain or maintain power and control over the other. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and psychological abuse. This violence may occur between spouses, partners, or family members and often involves manipulation, threats, intimidation, or isolation. Domestic violence can have severe and long-lasting effects on victims, impacting their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and it often requires legal, social, and therapeutic interventions to address.
What is Coercive Control?
Coercive control is a form of psychological abuse where an individual uses manipulation, threats, and intimidation to dominate and control another person’s behavior, freedom, and autonomy. Unlike more overt forms of abuse, coercive control often involves subtle tactics such as isolating the victim from friends and family, monitoring their activities, controlling finances, or limiting their access to resources. This persistent pattern of domination can leave victims feeling trapped, dependent, and fearful. Coercive control is designed to undermine the victim’s sense of self, eroding their confidence and ability to make independent choices, often without physical violence being present.
